GPU black screen with a PCIe riser: what to check

Quick answer
Compare the same GPU directly in the motherboard slot and through the riser. If direct connection also fails, the riser has not been isolated. If only the riser setup fails, check seating, routing and the exact riser vendor's generation guidance.
Describe the failure before changing settings
No picture from power-on and a black screen after an hour of gaming are different observations. Record when the display disappears, whether the computer restarts, whether audio continues and any motherboard diagnostic indicator. Do not treat a spinning GPU fan as proof that the complete connection works.
Our suggested comparison keeps the GPU, display cable, monitor input and power arrangement unchanged while testing the PCIe connection. Shut down and disconnect AC before reseating hardware, and follow the component manuals. Change one variable at a time so a successful boot tells you something useful.
Start with a direct-slot comparison

Should you force PCIe Gen 4?
Use the instructions for your exact riser, GPU and motherboard. A Gen 4 setting is a possible vendor-directed diagnostic, not a universal cure. SSUPD specifically reports RTX 5070 Ti configurations where manually selecting Gen 4 still does not make a Gen 4 riser work, and recommends a Gen 5 riser for that scenario. Before editing BIOS options, record the original value and identify the GPU slot setting in your board manual. Do not confuse a storage-slot setting with the graphics slot. If your documented test needs a visible BIOS screen, use the working direct-slot arrangement to make the change. Avoid copying another board's menu path or unrelated voltage settings.
Check the installed path
Look at the connection after mounting the GPU: does the bracket pull it away from the socket, does the cable reach without tension, and does closing the panel press on it? Compare the installed route with the case and riser instructions rather than buying a longer cable by default.
SSUPD's Gen 4 troubleshooting document notes that incomplete contact can reduce the active lane count or cause worse connection problems. It also discusses firmware and installation checks. Send support a useful test record
Include the motherboard and BIOS version, CPU, exact GPU, PSU and cable arrangement, riser model and length, case, original link setting, and the direct-versus-riser result. Add whether the failure happens before boot or under load. This is more actionable than “5070 black screen” alone.
If direct-slot operation is reliable but the supported riser setup still fails, ask the vendor about a compatible replacement or warranty diagnosis. We cannot certify a riser from its advertised generation or diagnose the cause from one boot.
