Fractal Terra: match CPU cooler height to your GPU

Quick answer
The Terra does not provide its maximum CPU cooler height and maximum GPU thickness at the same spine setting. Choose the GPU height band first, then find a position that accommodates both parts.
The seven-position clearance table
Fractal publishes the following limits. GPU length is 322 mm, reduced to 200 mm with a 120 mm radiator. The thicker-card allowance changes when GPU height exceeds 131 mm; the upper band ends at 145 mm. Fractal Terra CPU cooler and GPU support.

Why GPU height changes the cooler choice
These are calculated examples, not tested graphics cards. A 130 mm-tall, 50 mm-thick GPU first fits the thickness column at position 3, leaving 67 mm for the cooler. At 140 mm tall and the same thickness, position 5 is needed, leaving 57 mm. Length and other installation checks remain separate.
Build a parts worksheet before ordering
Our suggested workflow starts with the exact card model, including the board partner and variant. Keep a link to its dimensional drawing beside your shortlist. A chip name such as “RTX 5070” is not a usable set of dimensions, and a retailer's slot label is not a substitute for thickness in millimetres.
- Record GPU length, height and thickness from the card maker. Check how the drawing treats brackets and protrusions.
- Choose the appropriate height column above. Do not extend the table to a taller card without written confirmation.
- Find all positions that satisfy the GPU thickness. Compare your CPU cooler's installed height against those same rows.
- Check the cooler maker's socket, motherboard and RAM restrictions. Save the exact fan configuration used for its height figure.
- Record what remains unresolved: power-cable routing, connector space and any uncertain dimensions. Ask the relevant manufacturer about those points before buying.
Set the spine using the case instructions
Fractal's procedure identifies four locking screws, two underneath and two on top, and says to release the bottom screws first. Follow the illustrated procedure when adjusting the case; do not try to force a locked spine into position. Terra spine adjustment instructions.
A dimensional match leaves more to check
Keep separate notes for documented clearance, unverified details and your own observations after assembly. This page provides no measured temperature or noise result. A small numerical margin is not evidence that a build will be quiet, and we cannot certify a cable bend from a bare-card drawing.
Use the SFF GPU clearance checker for a second dimensional check, then return to the exact manuals for unresolved items. If your shortlist only works after changing the cooler's fan, treat that as a different configuration to verify, rather than silently keeping the original height.
