Will an RMx SHIFT PSU fit your case? Measure the side connectors first

· By Weerasak

Document-based guide · Methodology and limits

Quick answer

Enough wattage and matching ATX screw holes do not confirm RMx SHIFT case compatibility. Its side-mounted connectors need accessible space. Measure the internal connector-side gap and inspect obstructions; do not use exterior case width as the result.

Measure the space the cables actually use

You may be keeping a case and upgrading only the power supply. A familiar RMx name can make the purchase feel straightforward, but the SHIFT connector layout adds a separate installation question. Record the complete PSU part number and generation, then inspect the side from which its modular cables must be inserted.

Corsair’s SHIFT installation guidance requires an unobstructed PSU chamber and 30 mm between the connector side and side panel. Its case-compatibility support page states the 30 mm minimum for non-Corsair cases and lists tested examples. That is a starting rule, not a way to ignore case-specific instructions.

Start point

The PSU’s connector-side housing in its intended mounting position.

End point

The inner surface of the side panel in its closed position.

Separate inspection

Anything blocking access to plugs, latches or the cable route.

Do not measure from the motherboard tray, an outer case edge or the end of a loose cable. Do not open the PSU enclosure. Shut down and disconnect AC before inspecting the chassis, and follow the case manual for panel and supply removal. If the supply is not installed, use a confirmed dimensional drawing or ask support to confirm the intended position.

RMx SHIFT side-gap check

Compare your internal side gap with Corsair’s 30 mm minimum for non-Corsair cases. Case-specific approval and other dimensions remain separate.

What the number means

Nominal side-gap margin = measured internal gap − 30 mm
Illustrative measurements, not approvals for named cases
Internal gapArithmeticInterpretation
25 mm25 − 30 = −5 mmBelow the published generic minimum; recheck or choose a documented alternative
30 mm30 − 30 = 0 mmAt the threshold; no extra nominal margin is established
35 mm35 − 30 = 5 mmGap is above the minimum, but access and all other fit checks remain

Changing 29.5 to 30 by rounding would erase a shortfall. The calculator preserves decimal input and treats an unknown measurement as unknown. It does not add a universal safety allowance or diagnose whether a bent cable has been damaged.

A wide gap with a blocked connector is still a problem

Look at the complete installed arrangement: the side wall of a PSU shroud, a drive cage, another cable bundle or a mounting rail can interfere with insertion or routing. Report “blocked” even if a ruler elsewhere shows more than 30 mm. The calculator gives this obstruction priority over a positive gap result.

Inspect every required connection, not just the easiest-to-reach plug. Consider whether the cable can be connected and latched before the PSU is mounted, whether that sequence is allowed by the case manual, and whether it remains unstrained after closing the panel. We do not approve forcing the panel, cutting the shroud or modifying connectors to obtain a fit.

Use a case-specific approval when one exists

Corsair’s checked support list includes several of its own case families and a set of other manufacturers’ cases. It specifically notes HDD-cage removal for its 2500 series. An approval with an installation condition is not the same as “drop it into the stock arrangement.” Read the exact case instructions and preserve any displaced drive’s mounting and cable needs.

The interactive generic threshold is therefore limited to non-Corsair cases. Choosing “Corsair case” asks you to use the exact approval and installation instructions instead; the tool does not invent a model lookup. A familiar brand or series prefix is not a substitute for the full case model.

The RMx SHIFT second-generation manual also describes a case-width guideline alongside side access and clearance requirements. Do not stop at an external-width specification. Two cases of similar width can position the PSU and inner panel differently. If an official list and your measured installation appear to disagree, send the exact part numbers, orientation and measurement photos to support before purchasing a replacement.

Four questions a successful side-gap check does not answer

  1. PSU body fit. Check the full length, mounting position and nearby drive hardware. Side space does not establish length clearance.
  2. System power. Use the PSU calculator alongside the exact GPU manufacturer’s requirement. Case clearance does not establish sufficient capacity or the condition of an older supply.
  3. Approved modular cables. The second-generation manual specifies Type-5 wiring and requires the supplied or correctly supported cables. A cable from a non-SHIFT supply is not automatically suitable because both units carry an RMx name.
  4. GPU-end routing. The connection at the graphics card has its own space and installation requirements. Do not reuse the PSU-side 30 mm criterion as a universal GPU cable-bend rule.

Keep those checks separate on your purchase list. It is possible for the side-gap calculation to be within the minimum while the cable inventory is wrong, or for the wattage to be sufficient while the PSU cannot be installed as intended. Neither result cancels the other.

If the case is the part you want to keep

Your situationNext action before buying
The current PSU still satisfies the upgrade’s requirementsKeep it as a candidate; a side-connector layout is not itself a reason to replace a working supply
The new SHIFT supply is not yet purchasedCompare a conventional connector layout with appropriate capacity, length and approved cables
A documented removable cage is the obstructionFollow the case’s supported arrangement and check where the existing drives will go
The exact gap or approval cannot be confirmedAsk the case/PSU manufacturer; defer the compatibility claim rather than guessing

Only compare a new case after considering those paths. If shopping becomes necessary, search links shown after a reported conflict lead to a category, not a pre-approved product. Listing photos, connector sides and included cable sets still need checking against the exact model’s documentation.

One final question: will the panel close without acting as a cable clamp?

The measurement is useful precisely because this should be checked before you spend time wiring the whole machine. Do not use the panel screws to compress an obstructed installation. If there is visible connector or cable damage, stop using the affected arrangement and seek manufacturer guidance; this page cannot determine electrical safety from a number or photograph.
