Best RAM for a Gaming PC
Memory is where it is easy to overspend on capacity you will not use, or underspend on speed that actually moves frame rates. The right kit is mostly about generation, capacity and true latency.
Quick Summary · TL;DR
32GB is the 2026 gaming sweet spot. On new AM5 and Intel builds use DDR5-6000 CL30; on older AM4 use DDR4-3200/3600 CL16. Speed and low latency matter more than extra capacity.

DDR4 or DDR5?
New AM5 and modern Intel platforms use DDR5; older AM4 and budget Intel boards use DDR4. Tuned DDR4-3600 still games within a few percent of base DDR5, so on a budget DDR4 frees money for the GPU — but any fresh 2026 build should be on DDR5 for the upgrade path.
How much do you need?
16GB is the bare minimum and now causes stutter in heavy titles; 32GB is the sweet spot and what we recommend from the mid-range up. 64GB only helps heavy productivity, not gaming.
Speed and latency
On AM5, DDR5-6000 CL30 is ideal because it syncs 1:1 with the memory controller. What matters is true latency in nanoseconds, not the CL number alone — check any kit with the RAM Latency Calculator. Enable EXPO (AMD) or XMP (Intel) in BIOS or the kit runs at slow default speeds. Good lines include G.Skill Trident/Flare, Corsair Vengeance and Kingston Fury.
Frequently asked questions
Is 16GB or 32GB RAM better for gaming in 2026?
32GB is the sweet spot; 16GB now causes stutter in demanding titles as games allocate 12-18GB. 64GB is overkill for pure gaming.
What is the best RAM speed for gaming?
On AM5, DDR5-6000 CL30 is the sweet spot because it runs 1:1 with the memory controller. Faster kits give diminishing returns and can break that 1:1 sync.
Does RAM CAS latency matter?
Only as part of true latency in nanoseconds. A higher-CL, higher-speed kit can match a lower-CL slower one — compare them with the RAM Latency Calculator.
